Darling Barn

One of the most prominent and also most used buildings on the property is the Darling Barn, accessed by the first road as you come to the farm property. The circa 1840 post & beam “Old English” style barn was located at the end of Darling Lane in the Manchaug section of Sutton on property which had been a working farm for many generations. It is believed that the barn was constructed during ownership of Zelek Darling (a Revolutionary War Patriot) and his son John Darling’s lifetimes. The property was purchased by David and Yvette Picard in 1968. They continued to use the barn as they had sheep, a cow and grew vegetables. When the Picard family decided to build a new home on land across the street, they knew that they could no longer keep the barn in good condition and that it should be demolished. Anything existing in the interior of the barn was offered to Waters Farm it was eventually decided that the barn would be moved and reassembled at Waters Farm. The barn was disassembled and moved to Waters Farm with draft horses in 1991. Reconstruction was completed and Darling Barn was opened to the public in 1994.
